How the Debt-Free Date Calculator works

This calculator answers one simple, powerful question: on what exact date will you make your last debt payment? It takes your current balance, applies monthly compounding interest at your average rate, subtracts your fixed monthly payment, and repeats that process until the balance reaches zero — then converts the number of months into a real calendar date starting from the month you choose.

Months to payoff = −ln(1 − (r × Balance ÷ Payment)) ÷ ln(1 + r), where r = APR ÷ 12
Debt-free date = Start month + Months to payoff

Why "average interest rate" is an approximation

If you have a single loan or card, your APR is exact. If you have several debts — say, two credit cards and a personal loan — a single blended rate is only an estimate of your true payoff timeline, because payments don't always apply proportionally across accounts. For an exact, debt-by-debt calculation, use the Multiple Debt Calculator or the full Debt Payoff Calculator, which simulates each debt individually.

How to move your debt-free date earlier

  • Increase your monthly payment — even $50–$100 extra can cut months or years off your timeline. Try the Extra Payment Calculator to see exactly how much.
  • Lower your interest rate through a balance transfer or consolidation loan if you qualify.
  • Apply windfalls — bonuses, tax refunds, rebates — directly to principal.
  • Recalculate periodically as your balance and rates change to keep your target date realistic.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is my debt-free date calculated?+

The calculator uses your total balance, average interest rate, and monthly payment to determine how many months it will take to reach a zero balance, accounting for interest that accrues each month, then adds that many months to your chosen start date.

What if my payment is too low to ever pay off the debt?+

If your monthly payment does not exceed the interest accruing on your balance, the debt will never shrink and technically never reach zero. The calculator will warn you in this case so you can increase your payment or lower your rate.

Why does the calculator ask for an average interest rate instead of individual debts?+

This tool is designed for a quick, single-number estimate. If you have several debts with different rates, use the Multiple Debt Calculator or Debt Payoff Calculator for an exact, debt-by-debt blended calculation.

Can I move my debt-free date earlier?+

Yes — increasing your monthly payment has the biggest impact. Use the Extra Payment Calculator to see exactly how much time a specific extra amount would save.
